More About Dentures

What’s the difference between conventional dentures and implant-retained dentures?

+

Conventional dentures are removable and a good option for budget-conscious patients. They also take time to get used to, limit what you can eat, and don’t offer much support for your jawbone. If you’re missing many teeth, we may recommend an implant-retained denture option to ensure the long-term health of your jaw and an improved lifestyle.

How do I adjust to wearing dentures?

+

Wearing removable dentures can take some getting used to. Initially, dentures can feel a little strange in your mouth, but this will pass with time.

You may also experience a small change in your speech, excessive salivation, and different taste. Again, this usually goes away over time but if it continues, reach out and let us know.

A few tips to help you adjust to a new denture:

  • To adjust to chewing with a new denture, start with soft foods and work up to harder ones.
  • Eat with your back teeth, so you don’t dislodge your dentures.
  • Use adhesives until you can control your tongue and lips.
  • You may have gum soreness as you adjust to your new dentures. If you develop a sore spot, rinse your mouth with warm salt water and visit our office for an adjustment.

How do I care for my dentures?

+

Clean them daily with a soft brush, soap and water, or denture cleaning products. Brush on both sides to eliminate bacteria. When you take your dentures out at night, soak them in water or a denture cleaner.

When should I replace my Reston dentures?

+

You should replace them every five to seven years. Visit our office regularly so we can check your denture’s fit, offer denture care and hygiene suggestions, and evaluate any potential issues.
